A Brief History of Pizza

In 1889 a well-known episode extended the popularity of pizza beyond the boundaries of the city of Naples. Margherita, who was queen of Italy, was visiting Naples and heard about this new food and wished to taste it. A renowned chef had been asked to cook pizza at the royal palace. They prepared three pizzas, standard of that time: one with oil, garlic, and tomato; the second with basil and cheese; and the third with tomato, mozzarella, and basil. The queen, stunned at the actual colors of the last pizza, which was similar to the national flag, favored that one. This is how Pizza Margherita got it's name.

Italian immigrants in the previous century introduced the very first pizzerias to North America, and the pizza became a new world food fad. Nowadays, Naples still creates the best pizzas that can be made. The reason is that it is carefully made with buffalo mozzarella. The rest of the history of pizza, most of us already knows.
