Women need no sops

The way a society treats
Its women and children
Speaks volumes about it.

WOMEN HAVE come a long way. They have made their positions clear in many more complicated spheres of life than what they themselves could imagine of. And the world has long before been savouring the fruits of women’s virtues. And now they are on a level playing field of all imaginable odds and opportunities and they stand poised to stake indisputable claims for their due pounds.

Ultimately, what turns out to be those signs of change in our present day society is more of the result of these claims than of the so-called revolutions that other social organs like parties and pressure groups, both political and non-political, claim to have brought about over their efforts.

When it comes to women and their representation in the society, what surfaces most visibly is their positions in the political circles or in the circles of some power. It is a fact that not many changes have come up in the society by way of women holding such positions. So long as they remain not proportionally represented, the ones who get set and go with their male counterparts end up nowhere and they come back to square one. So, it is better not to press for their flesh in the electorate. But there is a strong stake when it is a matter of running the government.

Government is one and governance is something else. Governments come and go, with promises both kept and un-kept, but the governance mechanism remains all through the ages and no political party can replace it, make it completely to its favour. Rather, what they mostly do is to get their jobs done with the ones who show allegiance to the party. The remaining ones in the governance ring are powerful enough to steer things to the general well being of the society. If such a spectacle is to come to life, the bureaucracy and employment sectors of the world need to be democratically represented.

That is, women must strive to represent themselves in all walks of life. A working woman can contribute to the society as long as she is physically and mentally fit. But a politically powerful individual is able to cause any damage by way of corruption, incompetence and ignominy only when he/she is in power; that is no more than five years at a stretch.

Therefore, on this day of reckoning, women of the world need to stake a still stronger claim in the rings of equal and independent existence. They need to ascertain one thing that they are not in need of any sops or favour from any quarters rather what they need is a platform to let their intelligence, emotions, expertise and energy fair well for the well being of all. What is needed for the same is education; education for all and employment for all the deserving.

Educated woman are engines of progress and their presence in the family transforms the world. The need of the hour is not sops and half-hearted pleas for favours. Women themselves should show to the rest of the world that they are not only able to be on their own but they are capable of kick starting progress and development.

So, don’t pay to be the retinue of any political party; don’t beg for favours; don’t leave any stone unturned to get your voices heard; invest in your children and don’t let them inherit a biased, myopic mindset. Don’t wait for 33 per cent in elections, but work towards 50 per cent everywhere, ranging from homemaking to nation building. For, men and women constitute civilised humanity. Be inclusive.

Educate, get employed and be yourselves. Let this be your (not our) motto this Women’s Day.
